Microscopes unlock a magical visual world packed with unexpected riches! The curiosity and exploratory process of Leonardo da Vinci is the inspiration for this week, where children learn to use microscopes to discover and explore.

We will begin by learning about the different parts of compound and stereo microscopes. Your child will immediately start observing a variety of cool prepared slides. Then, children team up to collect samples outside for closer inspection. Part of the experience is collecting and preparing a specimen, observing, questioning, and talking about what the microscope reveals about it.
Sharing the view of a well-prepared specimen and slide is just fun! On the final day, your child gets to showcase a favorite specimen or discovery in a mini science fair.
Our focus for the week will be biomimicry, where examples in nature are the inspiration for engineering design, like the scientist who observed burrs sticking to his dog’s coat and invented Velcro. We’ll use microscopes to take a closer look and gain a different perspective on what is otherwise impossible to see. Your child’s curiosity and wonder will be ignited by zooming in on a drop of water, filled with living zooplankton and phytoplankton! There’s no end to the things that can be examined.
A microscope allows your child to discover and explore a whole new world, sparking curiosity and questions. We build on this natural fascination to develop skills in asking questions, observing, and then documenting those observations. The Microscope Lab reveals the excellence of form and function in the world around us. Children then derive inspiration from what they collect, prepare, and observe and apply it to engineering solutions.
